What languages are your course available in?

Advent eLearning courses are translated via browser. Meaning whatever language the browser is in the courses will adapt and be translated to that language.

How do you add your Court/Clerk and Judge during registration (optional)?

If you wish to have the name of your court/clerk and presiding judge appear on your Certificate of Completion, you can add that information when you register for a course. Simply enter the name of your court/clerk in the “Court/Clerk (optional)” field and the name of your judge in the “Judge (optional)” field. Those values will appear on your certificate when you successfully complete your course.

Advent eLearning courses allow you to pick up where you left off at any time. This is done by screen so be sure to finish whichever screen you are working on before you exit out of your course. If you are watching a video be sure to finish the video and move to the next step to save progress.

Are your courses evidence based?

Each of the programs is designed based on the existing best practices in the particular field, and  techniques or strategies that have been empirically shown to work are incorporated wherever possible.  Thus, while each particular course has not yet been empirically tested in a study designed to look at its  effects, every component of each course is grounded in research, science, and best practices. For an overview of evidence based methodologies that we use, click here.More specifically, these courses were developed by a researcher with experience in the fields of criminal  justice (including re-entry, recidivism, and deterrence) as well as psychology. As such, the structure,  format, and specific activities were designed to incorporate lessons from documented “best practices” in  each of the related fields. In addition, overarching best practices related to corrections and recidivism in  general have been incorporated at every level.  The government provides an important repository for information on national evidence based best  practices. For example, the National Institute of Corrections (NIC), a branch of the US Department of  Justice, provides guidance, information, research, and ongoing discussion boards related to the most  effective interventions being used today in the United States (http://nicic.gov/evidencebasedpractices).  The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) maintains an extensive database with model programs and implementation guides that provide immediate information about the most cutting  edge evidence based best practices in the field today (https://www.ojjdp.gov/mpg). Similarly, the  Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) maintains the national registry  of evidence-based programs and best practices in behavioral health interventions  (http://www.samhsa.gov/nrepp). With knowledge from these databases and relevant model programs,  each course utilizes tools that have been proven to be effective.  The programs are also designed with best practices in online teaching and learning in mind. The U.S.  Department of Education issued a report entitled “Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices in Online  Learning” (Means, 2009), which explores in great detail the aspects of an online learning program that lead to the best learning results for students. Lessons from these documented techniques are incorporated  at every level. In addition, each of the nationally recognized General Standards set out in the “Quality  Matters” rubric, standards designed specifically to evaluate the design of online courses, have been  incorporated where possible (Shattuck, 2010).

How long are your courses?

Our courses mostly range from 4-6 hours for level one courses, and 8-12 for level two courses. These courses are self-paced so it is dependent on the individual taking the course.

Will I be provided a certificate upon successful completion?

Each Advent eLearning course comes with a certificate of completion upon receiving a passing score. This certificate cannot be edited or changed to ensure that the student has completed their requirements.

Where can I take a course?

If you were not provided a program code or were not referred to an Advent eLearning course by an agency, simply click on the Take a Course button. Your agency is generally the name of who is referring you to take a course. This can be the name of a county/parish or the name of a District Attorney's office.

If you are not utilizing a program code or applying on behalf of an agency located on the Referring Agency Screen. Then you have 30 days to complete the course, if you are utilizing either of those options please reach out to the assigning agency for details.

Do your courses utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

Advent eLearning’s courses are all created by subject matter experts. Here's an example of cognitive rehearsal, one of the techniques you’ll see in the courses. A participant is  asked to remember a problematic situation they experienced in the past. They think through what  happened in that situation, and then they come up with as many alternative responses and outcomes to the  situation as they possibly can. The person now has the chance to imagine how the situation might have turned  out differently (better). They then “rehearse” or imagine the situation with the new ending rather than the  original outcome. Rehearsal is a technique that helps a person to learn a new way to respond, and makes  that positive response more likely to occur in the future.  In addition to the cognitive strategies and techniques that are embedded in activities in the programs, the  courses incorporate a social contextual (or environmental) component as well. Cognitive strategies are  focused entirely on an individual’s thinking about a situation and the choices they make, but we know that  there are some situations that make certain outcomes more likely. By incorporating a social contextual component into the program, we also encourage participants to focus on the ways in which they might  change their environment to change their behavior.  For example, if someone is trying to quit smoking, a cognitive approach might focus on why the person  felt they “needed” or wanted to smoke, and would identify other ways to meet those needs, or ways to  change those feelings. A social contextual approach, on the other hand, might suggest that the person  change their regular route home to avoid going past the store where they buy cigarettes every afternoon.
