The Yolo County District Attorney’s Office is leading the way in criminal justice reform with a focus on community healing, not just punishment. Through its innovative Restorative Justice Partnership (RJP), the office has shifted away from traditional prosecution, especially for misdemeanors and some felonies, toward a more meaningful and effective diversion model.
At the heart of this effort is Advent eLearning, which provides online, offense-specific education as part of the RJP process. Since the partnership began in 2020, nearly 400 participants have used Advent’s interactive, evidence-based courses to better understand their behavior and reduce the chance of reoffending.
Yolo County DA Jeff Reisig highlights Advent’s role as “a critical part of our evolution,” noting that participants benefit from flexible, accessible online learning while the DA’s office gains streamlined tracking and reporting. Advent courses, covering topics like Corrective Thinking, Shoplifting, Life Skills, and Substance Abuse, are assigned as part of restitution plans, with over 88% of participants successfully completing them.
The results speak volumes: a 170% increase in diverted cases over a single year, high satisfaction rates from both participants and victims, and just a 4.8% re-arrest rate for misdemeanor participants.
For communities looking to adopt smarter, more compassionate justice solutions, Yolo County’s story offers a compelling case for combining restorative practices with digital education.
